The Creativity Shell is planning on converting our existing blackbox auditorium into a fully functional Blackbox Theater/Media Center!
WHEN COMPLETE, THIS SPACE WILL FUNCTION AS:
SPONSORS
If you would like to be a sponsor for this project, please donate and support. Some of the sponsorship perks include your company name outside/inside the theater, use of the space 1 - 2x/month, advertising rights with media programs, educating and inspiring the next generation of makers through this one of a kind space and so much more!
In their ongoing mission to use creativity to educate and inspire the next generation of makers, the Creativity Shell is opening a second location in Houston!
Unlike their Kingwood studio that is open to the public however, the 2nd Creativity Shell studio will be located on the 7th floor of the Harris County Juvenile Justice Center at 1200 Congress Street in Downtown Houston. Empty prison cells will be converted into sewing, pottery, hydrophobic vegetable gardens and art rooms while the open space on the floor will be transformed into a kitchen. This Creativity Shell floor will offer a near full time schedule of classes and the organization hopes their classes will help offer cooking, sewing, art, pottery, indoor gardening, crochet and other practical life skills classes to incarcerated children at the facility.
Teachers teaching the classes will consist of local artists hired by the Creativity Shell and students at the facility can also expect a few guest appearances by members of the Houston Texans through the Inspire Change Grant the Creativity Shell recently won.
Why Juvenile Justice? When the Creativity Shell was first launched in 2015, many of their initial students were human trafficking survivors and children experiencing homelessness. Creativity Shell founder and executive director, Shelancia Daniel, who also holds a masters degree in educational psychology, realized the common denominator that united all the at risk students the organization was working with was low self confidence, low self esteem and poor mental health. Since then, classes and programs were re-engineered to not only teach the practical skills, but the fundamental skills that can come with them such as problem solving, self regulation, decision making, perseverance and positive mental health. With the success of this model, the organization began working with youths in the Juvenile Justice System for the past two years and has been making a positive impact on the students they were working with.
The Creativity Shell is hopeful that by using skilled/creative trades, students will have the opportunity to build self confidence and self esteem while learning fun skills they can use as a hobby or for employment once they are released.
In addition to support from the Houston Texans, the Creativity Shell also has the support of Ashley Furniture, ConocoPhillips, Coca Cola and they are working with the public to build more support for programs of this nature.
